William Russell is 21 years old and the founder of the Teen Support Network's
website.
Before he was
even born William suffered a stroke meaning he was in his mother’s stomach when
he had the stroke after Williams birth the doctors said to his parents that he may not live but he did a few days later the doctors said to his parents that William would not walk or talk but today William is happily
doing both walking and talking. Some people say they can't shut him up.
He had to do a lot of physical therapy,
speech therapy, and occupational therapy when he was younger swimming at
Noarlunga Swimming centre and horse riding at Jennibrook Farm ran by
Riding For the Disabled South Australia (RDASA), both swimming and
horse riding also helped him improved his balance and muscle tone.
The Years
2000 (Reception) and 2007 (Year 7) William attend Reynella South
Primary School he enjoyed hanging out with his friends and learning something
new every week. During his time at Reynella South Primary School he had multiple
duties such as in years 6 and 7 with classmates they would place the bins out
around the yard of the school and put them away. William was also flag a monitor,
a crossing road monitor and he’d always have a smile on his face.
William attended
Urrbrae Agricultural High School from Year 8 in 2008 to Year 13 in 2013 he really
did enjoy his time at Urrbrae William started up the Teen Support Group in 2013
a group for students to come and connect without the fear of being bullied or
left alone this was apart for his
Research Project. William was also on the Student Representative Council (SRC)
as the committee advisor in 2013 his role was to inform and remind students and
staff members of committee’s and including the SRC around the school of the important
dates of meetings and events. William was also on the City of Mitcham’s YAC (Youth
Advisory Committee) in 2013 as apart for his SRC Role.
In
December of 2009 William had to have an operation to remove his whole left
kidney as it not working well it had a kink in the tube leading down to the
bladder and the kidney function was only working at 9% out of 100%
On Sunday the
26th of January 2014 William was awarded the Young Citizen of the
year for the City of Mitcham in Adelaide, South Australia for setting up the
Teen Support Network, his advocacy for bullied youth and the entire LGBT community and being on the SRC at Urrbrae Agricultural High School
in 2013 as the Committee Advisor.
William is currently studying a double diploma in counselling (that's made up of a diploma in counselling and diploma in community services)
